Who Won - Tiger or Kitten Woods?
By: Carmen Diode
Tiger Woods won his second consecutive British Open, on Sunday, and the third of his career. The win tied him, with Walter
Hagen, for second on the list of Professional major golf tournaments won. Woods and Hagen have claimed 11 major golf
tournament wins. Jack Nicklaus leads the list with 18 major golf tournament wins.
The 2006 British Open was contested at the Royal Liverpool golf course in England. Liverpool, England is much better known
for The Beatles than it is for golf, yea yea yea.
The 135th staging of "The Open," as it is known in most parts of the golf world, will perhaps be better remembered for the
many sad and emotionally charged story lines than it will for great shot making.
Tiger Woods, Chris DiMarco, Mark Calcavecchia, and Thaworn Wiratchan had all recently lost a parent and claimed to be golfing
with the divine inspiration and assistance from their respective dearly departed loved one. Woods lost his father to cancer,
DiMarco and Calcavecchia lost their mothers to heart related problems, and Wiratchan simply lost both of his parents after
forgetting where they lived.
Mark Calcavecchia was perhaps the most unlikely of the field to be in contention to win because he is old, overweight and
generally regarded to be well past his golf prime. He was eligible to play only because he was a past winner of the British
Open. Calcavecchia tearfully praised his mother and claimed to feel her presence with him at the conclusion of the third
round when he was only four strokes off of the lead. His attitude changed, however, on Sunday after shooting a final round of
80, calling her a "worthless bitch" when asked about her presence during his final round.
Golfer Simon Khan attempted to have one of his parents whacked by a professional hit man when he saw the success that other
golfers were having by using their parent's death as a motivating factor - but police foiled the attempt and Khan will most
likely face criminal charges if he is ever captured.
Golfer Bart Bryant was in contention to win with a solid first round of 69, and he attributed his fine golfing to the divine
intervention of his recently departed mother. Bryant's score tumbled when he received a call from his brother Brad, who plays
on the Senior PGA Golf Tour, and was reminded that their mother was in fact still very much alive. Bryant finished next to
last.
When asked how many additional major golf tournaments he felt he could win using the death of his father as a motivating
force, Tiger Woods would not commit to a specific number, but did feel that he would win more major golf tournaments - and
he reminded the media that his mother was not getting any younger and that she ought to be good for a few major golf
tournament wins as well.
